Two people recently recommended that I read BIG MAGIC by Elizabeth Gilbert. They thought it would help me with some fear I’ve had with publishing my novel this fall.
I’ve been struggling with the idea of releasing my novel mostly because, while it is fiction, it is a part of my soul that I’ll be displaying out in the open, and up until now, I’ve kept that part of myself hidden away.
Let’s face it —It’s scary to hit publish.
Every time I’m about to hit publish for a blog post for instance, my stomach tightens, I get butterflies, and goosebumps, and a little lightheaded. And my blog posts are usually only about something I’ve found fascinating, something I want to share with my readers and friends. But my novel – oh man – to hit publish on that baby is going to take some big big guts.
I bought BIG MAGIC not really knowing what to expect. No, I never read EAT PRAY LOVE. I know, crazy!
I’m SO GLAD I read this book! BIG MAGIC is a MUST-READ for anyone who has been blessed with the creativity spirit.
Elizabeth Gilbert is an amazing writer. In BIG MAGIC she takes you through six parts of creativity: Courage, Enchantment, Permission, Persistence, Trust, and Divinity.
Here are some of my favorite quotes, however, there are so many more:
“Do you have the courage? Do you have the courage to bring forth this work? The treasures that are hidden inside you are hoping you will say yes.”
“Follow your own fascinations, obsessions, and compulsions. Trust them. Create whatever causes a revolution in your heart.”
“Recognizing this reality – that the reaction doesn’t belong to you – is the only sane way to create.”
“Curiosity is the truth and the way of creative living.”
“Don’t rush through the experiences and circumstances that have the most capacity to transform you.”
“If you can’t do what you long to do, go do something else.”
BIG MAGIC explained my life to me in two hundred and seventy six pages. My creative spirit has been inside me my whole life, and I’ve never known what to do with it. It’s fierce and bitchy and gets bored and is curious about everything. It wants my complete focus, above everything else, including my responsibilities and family. It moves fast and sometimes I can barely hold it down long enough to keep up with it.
This creative spirit has tormented me for years, trying to get out, and for years I have kept it inside. I would dabble in things but mostly I was busy have children and existing for the responsibility of life. Not for creativity.
When I started reading again in 2014 my mind about exploded. It was as if this creativity spirit was saying, “You’ve had your time, now it’s my turn.” I read at least twelve books back to back in about a month. I couldn’t get enough. Then I wanted to tell everyone about my books so I started to blog about them. But then I wanted to also tell everyone about things I liked, so I started to blog about that as well. After that I wanted to write my own book, so then I wrote my own book. Now, I am reading, blogging, writing, creating things, and my life has never felt fuller.
I’m learning how to co-exist with this creativity of mine. I know without a doubt I cannot live without letting my creative spirit live alongside me.
BIG MAGIC showed me how to do just that.
It showed me that I’m not crazy, I’m not alone. There are other creative people who think just like I do. It taught me that I’m not crazy to create things, but instead, that I will go crazy if I don’t.
Elizabeth says this about living a creative life: “A creative life is an amplified life. It’s a bigger life, a happier life, an expanded life, and a hell of a lot more interesting life.”
BIG MAGIC has definitely taught me to have “fierce trust” in releasing my work into the world, regardless of the outcome, but for the sake of creating. I wrote my novel to release it. I wrote my novel to tell a story —my story—now let’s release it shall we and move on to something else!
A good friend and I just reconnected after not talking since high school. Yes, that is about twenty years!
She informed me of the most wonderful thing, BIG MAGIC is now a Podcast.
It’s called Magic Lessons with Elizabeth Gilbert. I have listened to all of Season One already.
This podcast is so helpful and inspiring! She talks to real people about their struggles with creativity and also features famous authors and creators to offer their advice as well.
I love it and can’t get enough!
